Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. 1901 Heirat mit der Bildhauerin Clara Westhoff. Ausgedehnte Reisen, internationaler Freundeskreis: Lou Andreas-Salomé, Marie von Thurn und Taxis, Gide, Valéry, Klee, Kokoschka u.a. Mehrjähriger Aufenthalt in Paris, u.a. als Privatsekretär von Auguste Rodin. Seit 1919 in der Schweiz, vor allem in Soglio und Muzot. Freundschaftliche Beziehungen zu Nanny Wunderly-Volkart, Georg und Werner Reinhart, C.J. Burckhardt, J.R. von Salis u.a.
