Francis Pettygrove (1812-1887): A native of Maine, Francis Pettygrove purchased William Overton's claim to half of the town site of Portland.
Overton had been the original partner of Asa Lovejoy. Pettygrove and Lovejoy became partners in the town site. Interestingly, a coin toss between the two men was the deciding factor in the town site name. Lovejoy, who was from Boston, lost the toss to Pettygrove, who was from Portland, Maine. Pettygrove sold his share of Portland to Daniel Lownsdale in 1847 and moved to Washington to found Port Townsend.
