Mottin de la Balme, a French cavalry officer of some distinction, volunteered in 1777 to come to America to serve in the Revolutionary War. He led a force westward from Detroit to participate in George Rogers Clark's campaign in the Northwest, and was killed near Miami by Indians led by Little Turtle.
