William Shaffer Key (b. Oct. 6, 1889, Dudleyville, Alabama-d. Jan. 5, 1959), Major General in the National Guard, served on the Mexican border and with the American Expeditionary Force during World War I. He was called to active duty as commanding general of 45th Division (1940-1942), was provost marshal general in the European Theater, commanding general of U.S. Forces Iceland, and chief of U.S. Military Control Commission Hungary at the end of World War II. A decorated officer, General Key was returned to inactive status in August 1946.
