Jane Yolen was born February 11, 1939 in New York City. She graduated from Smith College in 1960, and received her M.Ed. from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 1976. After college she worked for several magazines and publishers as editor, and in 1963 published her first book for children, Pirates in Petticoats .
Throughout her long career she has written over 300 books for children and young adults including pictures books, novels, short stories, verse and plays, as well as editing fantasy and science fiction short story collections. While best known for her fairy tales and fantasy, Jane Yolen is equally at home writing fiction with a contemporary setting and non-fiction, some of the latter drawing on her interest in her Jewish-Quaker beliefs, love of New England and its history, and her interest in the natural world.
All of her books are noted for their "craftsmanship" and her beautifully realized interplay of language and story is particularly evident in her fairy tale picture books such as The Emperor and the Kite, The Sultan's Perfect Tree, and Dove Isabeau . This same ability to create entrancing images through language is also found in her young adult stories such as The Magic Three of Solatia . All of these books like the best of traditional fairy tales convey subtle messages about life's pleasures and harsh realities and the existence of both "gentle" and "rough" magic. Jane Yolen also writes science fiction stories, many with a humorous, parodying style such as her "Commander Toad" books that poke fun at many "Star Wars" characters and cliches. Some of her more recent works for young adults have dealt with provocative topics such as the Holocaust in The Devil's Arithmetic and religious responsibilities and belief versus personal feelings and the "World" in The Gift of Sarah Barker, a story of two young people in a Shaker community.
Jane Yolen has received many awards and citations for her work as an author, including the 1988 Kerlan Award; the Nebula Awards for "Sister Emily's Lightship" (1997) and "Lost Girls" (1998); The Golden Kite award for The Girl Who Cried Flowers and Other Tales (1974), The Transfigured Heart (Honor Book, 1975), and Moon Ribbon and Other Tales (Honor Book, 1976); the Christopher Medal for The Seeing Stick (1977) and How do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? (2000); and the Caldecott Award for The Emperor and the Kite (Honor Book, 1968) and Owl Moon (1988).
