William Penn Pigman (1820-1877) married Mary Theresa Sprigman (1833-1916). He owned steamboats operating between New Orleans and Havana, Cuba. At the outbreak of the Civil War he joined the Confederate States Army as Lieutenant in the 8th Florida Regiment, was taken prisoner at Gettysburg and imprisoned on Johnsons Island in Ohio. The Pigman home at Wake Key, Florida, was destroyed in an attack by Federal gunboats and Mrs. Pigman came to Savannah with her son to live with her sister. After the war, the Pigmans moved to Macon, Georgia, where William worked in a drug firm, William Augusts Pigman, his son, started working in the drugstore at the age of 15. He came to Savannah at 19 years-old and bought a drug business there. He married Edna A. Breeze of Rome New York; she was a well-known poet in Savannah.
