Born in England, emigrated to South Cottonwood, Salt Lake County, Utah in 1870; worked as a mechanical engineer for Germania Smetler, and other mining companies; served LDS Church as missionary to New Zealand, 1884-87; married 2nd wife, and served prison term for unlawful cohabitation. Moved to Montana to escape persecution, but returned to Utah after 1890.
