Phi Lambda Upsilon Phi was founded as an honorary chemical society in March 1899 at the University of Illinois. This was the first honor society dedicated to a single scientific discipline. Mu chapter, was founded at Penn State in 1914. The society promotes scholarship and investigation into all branches of pure and applied chemistry. Members are chosen from the junior and senior classes based on their exceptional work in the fields of pure and applied chemistry.
