The Unemployment Compensation Commission was established in 1935, replaced by the Division of Unemployment Compensation (Dept. of Labor and Industries) in 1939, renamed Division of Employment Security in 1941.

The Umemployment Compensation Commission was established in 1935 within the Dept. of Labor and Industries. It was replaced by the Division of Unemployment Compensation in 1939, renamed the Division of Employment Security in 1941. The division became an independent unit in the Executive Office of Manpower Affairs in 1982, and was replaced by the Dept. of Employment and Training in 1988.

St 1935, c 479, s 4 established the Unemployment Compensation Commission in, but not subject to, the Dept. of Labor and Industries. St 1939, c 20, s 1 replaced it with the Division of Unemployment Compensation; St 1941, c 685 renamed that body the Division of Employment Security. St 1982, c 668, which transferred the Dept. of Labor and Industries to the Executive Office of Labor from the Executive Office of Manpower Affairs, retained the Division of Employment Security in the latter office (s 4) (Executive Office of Economic Affairs per St 1987, c 525), until it was superseded in 1988.

Subsequent history: St 1988, c 236, s 19 established the Dept. of Employment and Training, replacing the Division of Employment Security and the Office of Training and Employment Policy; St 1996, c 151, s 110 et seq. renamed it Division of Employment and Training within the Dept. of Labor and Workforce Development, replaced by a Division of Unemployment Assistance as well as a Division of Career Services in the Dept. of Labor (St 2003, c 26, s 554)
