Whatcom County Woman's Christian Temperance Union (Whatcom County, Wash.)
Variant namesThe Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) was founded nationally in 1874 to further the message of abstinence from alcohol.
Whatcom County-based chapters of the WCTU date back as early as 1883, and existed in the towns of Sehome, Fairhaven, Lynden, Sumas, and Bellingham before consolidating into one single Whatcom County Chapter. The Whatcom County Chapter focused on resisting the sale and use of alcohol (and, to a lesser extent, tobacco) through protests and educational activities.
