Gibson A. Danes, born in 1910, received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1936, and earned a Bachelor of Science (1937) and a Master's degree (1938) from Northwestern University. He received a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1949. Danes began teaching art history at Yale in 1947. He was dean of the Yale School of Architecture and Design from January to June of 1958, and of the School of Art and Architecture from 1958 to 1967. He was acting chairman of the Department of Art from 1962 to 1963. In 1968 Danes became dean of visual arts at the State University College at Purchase, New York, a position he held until his retirement in 1978. Danes co-authored Looking at Modern Painting . He died in Litchfield, Connecticut on December 4, 1992.

Gibson A. Danes received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1936, and earned a Bachelor of Science (1937) and a Master's degree (1938) from Northwestern University. He received a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1949.

In the spring and summer of 1947, Danes was an instructor in art history at Yale. He was dean of the Yale School of Architecture and Design from January to June of 1958, and of the School of Art and Architecture from 1958 to 1967. He was a Professor of Art from 1961 to 1967, and Acting Chairman of the Department of Art from 1962 to 1963.

In 1968 Danes became dean of visual arts at the State University College at Purchase, New York, a position he held until his retirement in 1978.

Danes co-authored Looking at Modern Painting . During his career he received fellowships from the Ford, Carnegie and Rockefeller foundations, and from the American Council of Learned Societies.

In 1937 Danes married Claire Tomowske, with whom he had a son, Christopher. After her death in 1953, he married Joan P. Dewan; they were the parents of a son, Mark. Following the death of his second wife, Danes married the artist Ilse Getz in 1964. Danes and Ms. Getz died in Litchfield, Connecticut on December 4, 1992.
