The 8th Indiana Cavalry was first organized in Indianapolis in 1861 as the 8th Indiana Infantry. In April 1863 the regiment was given horses and served as mounted infantry. On 15 October 1863 the regiment changed from infantry to cavalry and was reorganized as the 8th Indiana Cavalry.
