James Fleming Waddell was born in 1826 in Hillsboro, N.C. and came to Ala. as a young man. Waddell served as 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army in the Mexican War. In 1861 Waddell enlisted in the Confederate states Army as captain of a company in the 6th Ala. Infantry Regiment. Later he resigned his commission in the 6th to organize an artillery battery known as Waddell's Battery. He was later promoted to major and commanded a battalion of batteries. Following the war he was elected probate judge of Russell County, Ala. and later practiced law in Seale, Ala.
