J. H. Birkinshaw (b. 1894 in Kippax, Yorkshire) was educated at Leeds University. A Lieutenant, 14th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment, he transferred to the MGC (Machine Gun Corps) and served on the Western Front attached to the South African Scottish Regiment from May 1916. He was wounded and surrendered at Delville Wood in July 1916, and held as a POW (Prisoner of War) at Gtersloh, Crefeld, Schwarnstedt, and Holzminden. He was one of a number of prisoners released to Holland in June 1918 in exchange for German POWs (Prisoners of War). He later became a professor of chemistry.
