Williams College. Adelphic Union Society
Variant namesThe Adelphic Union, established by 1795 to promote the "literary improvement of its members," was the first extra-curricular student organization at Williams College. The Union soon split into the Philologian and Philotechnian Societies. The Societies were known for their library collections, debates on social and political topics, as well as public orations and exhibitions. The Philorhetorian Society (1844-1847) was a short lived rival society. In 1963, the Adelphic Union was formally dissolved and the library collections were transferred to the College Library.
