Sterling Alexander Martin Wood was a lawyer, legislator and Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. Under the command of Albert Sidney Johnston, he was active in repressing pro-Union elements in East Tennessee. He was appointed a Brigadier General in 1862 Jan. and was on the field at Shiloh, Perryville, Murfreesboro and Chickamauga. He resigned his commission on 17 Oct. 1863 after the Battle of Chickamauga and moved to Tuscaloosa where he practiced law. He later represented Tuscaloosa County in the Ala. state legislature 1882-83.
