John Douglas Woodward, illustrator and landscape artist, was born on July 12, 1846 in Middlesex County, Virginia. The family moved to Kentucky in 1849 and to Canada in 1862, during the Civil War, finally settling in Richmond, Virginia, after the war. Woodward studied art in Cincinnati and at the Cooper Institute in New York City. He married Maria Louise Symmons of New York City in 1875, and settled in New Rochelle, New York, in 1905. Woodward's newphew, the Reverend Edmund Lee Woodward, was the builder and director of Shrine Mont, an Episcopal retreat center, and Art Hall, one of the buildings on the property, is dedicated to John Woodward and holds many of his paintings.

Born in Virginia, died in New York state, Woodward studied art under F.C. Welsh in Cincinnati. He is best known as the illustrator of Hayden's U.S. Geological Survey which was probably drawn from photographs taken by expedition members.
