Ernst Closs (1898-1974), a structural geologist, was born in Germany and educated at the University of Breslau. He conducted various geologic investigations in Europe and the Middle East before settling permanently in the United States. Cloos became a lecturer in structural geology at Johns Hopkins in 1931 and became Professor in 1941. He was Chairman of the Geology Department from 1951 to 1963 and retird from Johns Hopkins in 1968. Cloos specialized in microstructural analysis and made an important contribution to the study of the geology of the of geology of the Appalachian Mountains. He served as president of the Geological Society of America in 1953.

Cloos was appointed a lecturer in structural geology at Johns Hopkins University in 1931 and rose to professor in 1941. He was chairman of the geology department from 1951-1963 and retired from Johns Hopkins in 1968. Cloos specialized in microtechtonics and played a major role in the study of the geology of the Appalachian Mountains. Cloos served as president of the Geological Society of America in 1953.

Biographical Note: Ernst Cloos (1898-1974) was a structural geologist and professor at The Johns Hopkins University.

Born in Germany Cloos took his doctorate from the University of Breslau in 1923. Cloos came to the U.S. in 1930 to study the granitic rocks of the Sierra Nevadas. He joined the faculty at Hopkins in 1931 where he remained until his retirement in 1968. The majority of Cloos's work was on the crystalline rocks of the Piedmont region and the Blue Ridge Mountains where he studied the Martic overthrust, the Glenarm series, and oolite deformation. His clay modeling experiments at Esso led to his valuable work on gulf coast fracture patterns.
