Wadley and Mount Vernon Railroad.

Hide Profile

The Central of Georgia Railway, formed from its predecessor, The Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia in 1895 was a dominant force in the economic life of Georgia and parts of Alabama through the mid-twentieth century. Through its many branch and subsidiary lines, land holding companies, and agricultural experimentation, it controlled much of the region's transportation and was a strong influence in the rural development of the area.

(Cont.) The Wadley and Mount Vernon Railroad was incorporated in Jefferson County, Georgia in 1889. The line ran 41 miles from Wadley, Georgia, on the main line of the Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia to the Oconee River, south of Rockledge. The line was completed in 1903.

(Cont.) In 1905, the railroad was sold to the Central of Georgia Railway. It was merged with the Stillmore Air-Line Railway to form the Wadley Southern Railroad in 1906. By a charter amendment made in that same year, the name of the line was changed to the Wadley Southern Railway Company.
