Paolo L. Abbate (1884-1973), an internationally renowned sculptor, was born in Villa Rosa, Sicily. Abbate was educated in Rome and Florence, and was an ordained minister, a teacher, and an author, as well as a sculptor. He came to the United States in 1903, and worked in New York City. Abbate was president of the International Fine Arts League; a member of the National Sculptor's Council and of the Artists Council, Inc., of the Connecticut Artists and Writers Society; and was founder of the Torrington Unico CLub.
