White Cornell Duyckinck was born on October 23, 1843, in Brooklyn, New York. On both his father's and mother's side, he was descended from early seventeenth century immigrants. He graduated from Yale College in 1865 and entered a life of business in New York City, mainly focusing in storage, shipping, and imports. Between 1886 and 1891, he was forced to leave business, because of a sickness resulting from exhaustion. Between 1891 and 1914, he worked for Mutual Life Insurance Company in New York. He was married to Caroline Hyde, with whom he had three children. He died of cerebral thrombosis in Plainfield, New Jersey, on February 21, 1936.
