Born on December 10, 1911 in New York City, Abraham Goldin studied biology at Brooklyn College before earning a Ph.D. in zoology at Columbia University in 1942. While completing his studies at Columbia, he taught laboratory biology at Queens College. After World War II military service, Dr. Goldin served as chief of the Biology Section at the Army Chemical Center at Edgewood, Maryland from 1946 to 1949 before concentrating his studies to the Department of Preventive Medicine at Johns Hopkins University.

In 1952 he joined the Pharmacology Section of the National Cancer Institute's Laboratory of Chemical Pharmacology, as head of the Baltimore group of biologists. Spending the rest of his career at NCI, Dr. Goldin retired as Assistant Director for International Treatment Research in the Division of Cancer Treatment in 1983.

Dr. Goldin's work at NCI concentrated on the study of tumor biology and cancer chemotherapy. Through experimentation with treatment of animal tumors, he is considered a pioneer in experimental cancer therapeutics. He is credited with identifying hybrid resistance, and the syndrome of meningeal leukemia, and was a leader in the design, development, and combined use of drugs for chemotherapy. In these efforts, he was also an early proponent of international cooperation in the research and design of chemotherapy treatments.

Concurrently, Dr. Goldin also held an adjunct professorship at Brandeis University (1957-1968) and a research consultant position at George Washington University Medical School's Pharmacology Department (1960-1983) as well as editorships with the journals Advances in Pharmacology and Chemotherapy, and Cancer Research.

After 1983, Goldin continued work at NCI as scientist emeritus until his death in 1988.
