The General Conference of the Protestant Episcopal Church charged a committee in 1856 to gather information about the Church of Sweden. That committee's report was presented to the 1859 General Conference and published in the conference's Journal of the Proceedings (1860). The General Conference of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States of America, seeking to unify Protestant Christians in the United States, inquired in 1859 into the creeds and practices of the Church of Sweden as well as other churches. Although efforts at unification persisted through the 1890s, little was achieved.
