Howard Keith Alden was raised in Oneonta, New York by his parents Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Alden. He received his AB degree from Harvard in 1906, then proceeded to study at the Graduate School of Applied Science from which he did not obtain a degree. In 1909, he married Eunice Weston. He became a construction engineer at Stone and Webster in Boston and later worked at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston as the superintendent of buildings and grounds.
