George Wyndham Hamilton Knight-Bruce was born in 1852 into a wealthy family at Keston in Kent. He was educated at Eton and Merton College, Oxford. After recovering from a hunting accident, he vowed to devote his life to God's work. He was ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1876. In 1885, at age 33, he was nominated to be Bishop of the diocese of Bloemfontein, Africa. He embarked on an expedition to the Zambesi in 1888, sponsored by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. After returning from his exploration, he convinced the Anglican missionary societies in England and his fellow bishops in South Africa that a mission must be started in the new territory. He became the first bishop of Mashonaland in 1891. He and his wife, Lillie started over 50 branches of a Mashonaland Mission Association, founded a quarterly magazine and raised £3,000 for the mission. He was known for his bravery, determination and kindness. He died on December 17, 1896 at age 44.
