The commission was established by the legislature in 1955 with its membership reconstituted in 1960. A consumer board member was added in 1978. In 1983, functions relating to structural pest control were transferred from the joint-secretary of the state examining boards to the commissioner of agriculture. The commissioner became secretary for the commission and was empowered to issue licenses and perform other duties as directed by the commission in carrying out state laws.

The commission regulates the licensing and practice of structural pest control businesses, operators, and employees in Georgia, adopting reasonable rules to protect the public and ensure the proficiency of licensees. It administers examinations, issues and renews licenses to qualified businesses, and certificates to qualified operators, and registers the employees of a licensee. Enforcement of state laws and commission regulations pertaining to structural pest control is essentially the responsibility of the commissioner of agriculture, with the commission assisting in an advisory capacity.
