The Moroccan Cultural Festival was initiated in 1985 by Miriam Cooke, then assistant international studies professsor, and Bruce Lawrence, a religion professor, when they set up an exchange program between Duke and the University of Marrakech. The program was the first of its kind between an American and an Arab University. The festivities included lectures on various aspects of Moroccan living, fashion shows, an art exhibit, a film on Moroccan women, and a Moroccan dinner.
