Sherman Smith was born in Reedsburg, Wis. on June 11, 1918. In 1937, he had completed four years of high school and went to work to support his widowed mother digging graves in a cemetery. He enlisted in the Army at Seattle, Wash. on September 16, 1940 as a member of the 41st Division of the Washington National Guard. By 1942, Smith had joined the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Lewis, Wash. and was assigned to the 87th Mountain Infantry. He served at Fort Lewis, Wash.; Jolon, Cal.; Camp Hale, Colo.; Fort Ord, Calif.; Kiska, Alaska; Camp Carson, Colo.; Camp Swift, Tex.; and in Italy. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant while serving with the 10th Mountain Division. Smith died on September 12, 2002.
