The Australian Gas Light Company was formed in Sydney in 1837. After equipment was brought from England and buildings constructed in Jenkins Street, Darling Harbour, operations were commenced in 1841. Demand for gas led to the laying of mains and the building of an additional manufacturing plant at Mortlake. In 1890 the company purchased the goodwill and property of the Parramatta Gas Company and thus further extend its operations.
