Civic organization created in 1918 to consolidate fundraising efforts of charitable agencies in Toledo. Began during World War I as a "war chest." After the war, it was renamed "Toledo Community Chest." Renamed "United Appeal" in 1960, then "Crusade of Mercy" in 1962. Current mission is "to increase the capacity of people working together to care for one another."
