Howe, Herbert M. (Herbert Marshall), 1844-1916.
Herbert Marshall Howe, physician and capitalist, was born in Roxbury, Mass. on 16 July 1844 to Mark Antony Dewolfe and Elizabeth (Marshall) Howe. As a child he was educated at the Rectory School in Hamden, Conn. During the Civil War he served as an acting medical cadet in Philadelphia. He received his M.D. from the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1865. He briefly set up private practice in Philadelphia but quickly turned his interests to the coal industry and railroads. He was a member of Harrison, Havemeyer & Co. and A. Pardee & Co., coal miners and shippers. He was President of the Allentown Rolling Mills and the Ogden Mine Railroad Co. He was Vice-President of the North Pennsylvania Railroad Co. He also served as a Director of the Tradesmen's National Bank and the Academy of Fine Arts. Howe died of heart disease on 1 October 1916.
