Breakwater Hotel built in the 1860s to house workers at Pacific Guano Company factory located further along the road on Long Neck (presently Penzance Point); property bought by developer Horace Crowell in 1889 and he turned building to face Great Harbor. In the 1890s it became a hotel and was sold in 1900 to Maria Bowman; ownership changed several times but in 1924 Heloise G. Redfield became the general manager and in 1940 bought the hotel herself. She is the one proprietor who is most closely associated with the hotel. In 1960 the hotel was bought by the Marine Biological Laboratory and subsequently demolished and its site used for parking.
