Bedell, Grace, 1848-1936
Variant namesAt the age of eleven, Grace Bedell Billings (1848-1936) of Westfield, New York, wrote to Abraham Lincoln shortly before he was elected President of the United States suggesting that he wear a beard to improve his appearance. Lincoln replied to her letter without committing himself to growing a beard, but nonetheless began wearing one soon thereafter.
