William Thetford Le Viness was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1913. He developed cerebral palsy at eight months old. He graduated from Columbia University with an M.A. in English and became a free lance writer. He relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1939 and in 1944 became Head Librarian at the New Mexico Department of Welfare (later to become the New Mexico State Health and Social Services Department). During his tenure as Head Librarian, Le Viness continued to contribute articles to various periodicals and produced a publication on William Hayley in 1945.
