Emma C. and Lillian A. Soldan were two of four daughters born to Louis and Christena Soldan, who immigrated from Germany to the United States in 1880. Louis was a minister. They lived in Bainbridge, Berrien County (1900) and in Beaverton, Gladwin County (Mich.) (1930). Emma was born May 1894 and Lillie in Dec. 1898. Their sisters Tecla, born Nov. 1886, and Annis, born March 1896, completed the family. In 1920 Emma lived with the Benjamin Penner family in Sherman, Gladwin County (Mich.) while teaching in the local district school. Both Emma and Lillie graduated from the County Normal Training Class, having taught in Gladwin (Mich.), Emma in 1919 and Lillie in 1920. Both sisters taught at Butman Township, and at least one in Lyle, and both taught later at Beaverton Public School in 1930. Later, Emma earned a B. S. from Central Michigan College of Education, later Central Michigan University, in 1942. Emma died on March 19, 1965.
