Born in 1943 in Troy, Alabama, Samuel C. Shirah, Jr. worked with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee as an organizer. In 1963 he joined other volunteers to complete the protest march of murdered postal worker William Moore. Shirah was jailed in Alabama and Virginia for his civil rights activities.
