John Potter joined the U.S. Air Force in Iowa in 1942 and served at Elmendorf Air Force Base and at Fort Glenn. In 1942 and 1943, he served in the Aleutians with the Thirty-Sixth Bomber Squadron and the XI Bomber Command as a photographer. He participated in various attacks on Japanese installations in the Aleutians and was awarded the U.S. Air Force Air Medal. Potter retired from the Air Force in 1970. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
