Biographical note: Earl Eastwood graduated from Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky in 1919, and was an instructor in education from 1921 to 1923. He served on the board of curators from 1943 to 1954. In 1939 he became news editor of the DAYTON JOURNAL HERALD. Clement Vallandigham held a similar position on the DAYTON JOURNAL in the 1840s.

Clement Laird Vallandigham is best known for his oppostition to the Civil War. A democrat from Ohio, Vallandigham had served in the United States House of Representatives, and was running for governor of Ohio in 1863 when he was convicted by a military court for his vocal opposition to the war and banished to the Confederate States. He lost the election but returned to Ohio the following year. Following other unsuccessful attempts to regain public office he returned to the practice of law. He died in 1871 as a result of shooting himself while attempting to demonstrate how a murder victim could have shot himself.
