John W. Roberts (b. Mankato, Minn.-d. Jan. 8, 1999), U.S. Air Force general, received his commission and pilot wings through the aviation cadet program in 1944. After serving for several years as an instructor pilot and an assignment to a fighter wing in Germany (1946), he served as flight commander and squadron operations officer, flying combat missions in F-84s and F-86s in Korea. In 1954 he began assignments with the Air Training Command, including as operations staff officer at Headquarters and as commander, 3529th Combat Crew Training Squadron. In 1958 he served at 12th Air Force HQ, and later transferred to Pacific Air Forces HQ in Hawaii. In the late 1960s, General Roberts became vice commander, 4453rd Combat Crew Training Wing, then commander, 366th Tactical Fighter Wing, and director of the Tactical Air Control Center, 7th Air Force HQ, in Vietnam. In the early 1970s, he served in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, and in 1975 was assigned as commander of Air Training Command, responsible for recruiting and training all Air Force personnel. He retired in 1979.
