Rev. Benjamin Humphreys of Felin-foel, Llanelli, Carmarthenshire was born in Tal-y-bont, Cardiganshire. He attended the Baptist College in Llangollen and served as a minister in Manchester before joining one of the largest churches in Wales, namely Felin-foel in Carmarthenshire.

Benjamin Humphreys was also a historian and took great delight in collecting old books and manuscripts. He is the author of a history of the Baptists of Felin-foel, Cyfrol goffa, dau can mlwyddiant, 1709-1909 : hanes Bedyddwyr Felinfoel, 1909. He died in 1934.

John Jones, whose note-book is to be found amongst this collection, was a Baptist minister at Capel Sion, Merthyr. He was born in 1806 and died in 1859.
