1828 joined the Bombay marine, midshipman; 1829-1834 lieutenant serving aboard the East India Company's ship the Palinurus as a draughtsman; second half of the 1830s part of the survey of Ceylon and the Gulf of Mannar; 1840 joined the Nitocris for the survey of Mesopotamia; 1843 continued Captain Lynch's survey of the Tigris and Euphrates; 1844 collected information on the boundary between Persia and Turkey; 1847 commander; 1848 surveyed the course of the ancient Nahrwan Canal; 1850 surveyed the bed of the Tigris, discovered the site of the ancient Opis and undertook research around the Median wall and Physcus of Xenophon; 1852 undertook a trigonometrical survey between the Tigris and the Upper Zab; 1853 produced a large scale map of Baghdad; 1854-1855 political agent at Baghdad and consul-general in Turkish Arabia; 1855-1864 political agent, the Persian Gulf; 1858 captain; late 1860s-1870s undertook geographical work for the India Office and served on the council of the Royal Geographical Society.
