Lawrence Campbell Merriam Jr. was born on August 31, 1923 in Portland, Oregon. He earned his B.S. in forestry in 1948 from the University of California, Berkeley, his M.F. in 1958 and Ph.D. in 1963 in forest management from Oregon State University. Dr. Merriam worked as a log scaler (1948-1950), state parks planner in Oregon (1951-1953) and state park and highway forester (1953-1959) before becoming an assistant professor of forestry at the University of Montana in 1959. After spending seven years in Montana, Dr. Merriam joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota as professor of forest recreation and policy in 1966.
