College professor, of Middlesex County, New Jersey; worked as a secretary at the American University in Cairo, Egypt; graduated from Wells College in Aurora, New York, in 1928; studied English at Columbia University, receiving an M.A. in 1933 and a Ph.D. in 1944; taught literature at Douglass College, Rutgers University, from 1936 to 1939 and again from 1944 until retirement in 1971, including four years as English Department chairman, 1964-1968; spent many years researching a book (The Bloomsdbury Heritage, published 1976) on Virginia Woolf and her circle.
