Martha Peterson served as president of Barnard College from 1967-1975. She was born and educated in Kansas, receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. There, in 1946 she was named Assistant Dean of Women. Eventually she was named Dean of Women. In 1956 she transferred to the University of Wisconsin at Madison as Dean of Women. In 1963 she became University Dean for Student Affairs. She became President of Barnard in 1967. In 1975 she resigned her position at Barnard in order to become the first woman president of Beloit College. The recipient of over 20 honorary degrees and active in civic and professional organizations, she was inducted into the University of Kansas' Women's Hall of Fame in 1972. In 1982 she donated her personal papers to the University of Kansas.
