Wilbur Huntington Proctor (1849-1940) had numerous occupations that included musician, soldier, confectioner, retailer, streetcar conductor, and postal worker. From January 1864 to January 1865, Proctor served as a musician with the New York Infantry, 70th Regiment, Company G, and in the New York Infantry, 86th Regiment, Company K, and participated in the Overland Campaign and Richmond-Petersburg Campaign. From February 1865 to March 1868, Proctor served in the United States Infantry, 14th Regiment, stationed at various locations, including Fort Trumbull, Connecticut; Fort Vancouver, Washington Territory; Camp Warner, Oregon; and Fort Boise and Camp Winthrop Forks (also known as Camp Three Forks), Idaho Territory, during which time he served as an orderly with Lieutenant Colonel John J. Coppinger and became acquainted with Donald McKay, a government scout. From April 1868-1874, Proctor engaged in numerous business enterprises and careers in New York City. He owned a confectionary store and worked at the A.T. Stewart & Co. department store, and as a streetcar conductor for the Third Avenue Railway Company and the Sixth Avenue Railroad Company, and as a letter carrier and clerk with the United States Postal Office.
