Hide Profile

Lawyer and state legislator, of Vergennes, Vt.; grew up in Waltham, Vt.; son of Hanna and Hiram Fisher; m. Mary Jane Ripley, half sister of poet and writer Julia Ripley Dorr. In July 1864 the Fishers sailed for London where Cyrus was to be representative of the Emma Mine Company of Utah, presumably to market their securities in Europe. After ca. 10 years in Europe, returned to Vermont. He was in debt, largely due to loans to friends not repaid. He had assets but they were in the U.S., including monies owed him by Emma Mine Company. The Fishers sailed for home in March 1873 on the White Star liner Atlantic. The ship was caught in a fierce North Atlantic gale and floundered off the coast of Halifax, Nova Scotia. 535 lives were lost, including those of Mary and Cyrus Fisher.
