William Henry Black (1808-1872) was an antiquarian and author. Early in his career, he published catalogues of the Arundel manuscripts at the College of Arms (1829) and of Colfe's Library at Lewisham (1831). He also compiled a catalogue of Ashmole manuscripts, published in 1845. In 1840 he became assistant keeper in the Public Record Office, where he compiled inventories of the Pells Office records and reported on the Treasury records. Meanwhile, he wrote pamphlets on biblical history, edited several volumes of early English poetry for the Percy Society, and wrote articles for the British Archaeological Association Journal. Black was elected fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1858 and served on the council; he was also a member of numerous other archeological societies in England. In 1840 he became an ordained minister of a congregation of Seventh-Day Baptists. He was married three times, and died in 1872.
