Hirschler, Gertrude

Born in Vienna in 1929, Gerturde Hirschler emigrated to America in 1940, settling with her family in Baltimore. She attended local schools and graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1952. She lived most of her adult life in New York, where she died in 1994. The contemporary world's leading translator of the works of the nineteenth century German rabbi, Samson Raphael Hirsch (1808-1880), Hirschler published her first translation of Tehillim (Psalms) in 1960 and completed her widely acclaimed version of Hirsch's Chumash in 1986. She worked as an editor at the Herzl Press from 1965 to 1976, and as a freelance translator of works from Hebrew, Yiddish, and German into English.
