Thurgood Marshall College (University of California, San Diego)
Administrative History
The Thurgood Marshall Provost acts as the chief academic and administrative officer for the college. The Provost holds a tenured faculty appointment in a campus academic department and reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The Academic Senate's Committee on Educational Policy has delegated the provost authority to sign student petitions and monitor Senate regulations. The Provost also has responsibility for freshman orientation, academic counseling, graduation, the designation of college honors, and dismissal. The Provost works closely with and partially supervises the College Dean.
Opened in 1970 and designated as Third College, the third college in a multi-college master plan, Thurgood Marshall College was named in October of 1993. Thurgood Marshall College acting provosts included Armin Rappaport (1967-1968) and William R. Frazer (1969-1970). Joseph Watson (1970-1981) was the first provost, followed by Faustina Solis (1981-1988) and Cecil Lytle (1988-present).
