James Bewick was born on 24 June 1903, the son of a commercial clerk. He matriculated at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, in 1922 . As was common practice at the time, he attended his classes in Natural Philosophy, Mathematics and Motive Power at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow . The College was affiliated with the University and as a result, students of the College were able to matriculate and graduate with degrees from the University. He graduated BSc from the University of Glasgow in 1926 .

James Bewick died at Eaglesham, East Renfrewshire, Scotland on 27 May 1980 .
